"The impact from shipping costs alone to inflation is likely very small," Kapteyn said. But Kapteyn said the Red Sea disruptions will have less of an effect than the supply chain disruptions that helped fuel inflation during the pandemic. The attacks in the Red Sea come as traffic is also restricted through the Panama Canal due to low water levels from a drought.

British clothing retailer Next recently warned of stock delays as a result of the longer ocean transit. Nike last week lowered its annual sales growth forecast and unveiled plans to cut costs by $2 billion over the next three years. "Goods companies don't have the pricing power they did in the pandemic, and some in the hotel and travel [industries] — they don't have the pricing power they did in the immediate post-Covid," he added. Sales growth for companies in the S&P 500 is on track to average 2.7% this year, according to mid-December analyst estimates posted by FactSet. Consumer spending on apparel and groceries rose 2.4% and 2.1%, respectively, from the year-earlier period, according to the survey.

KYIV, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Two cargo vessels were headed to Ukrainian ports on Saturday, the first to use a temporary corridor to sail into Black Sea ports and load grain for African and Asian markets, a senior Ukrainian government official told Reuters. Five vessels have so far left the port of Odesa, using the corridor which hugs the western Black Sea coast near Romania and Bulgaria. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said that two bulk carriers "Resilient Africa" and "Aroyat" ships were already on their way in the Black Sea to the Ukrainian ports to load almost 20,000 tons of wheat for Africa and Asia. Shipping data showed both vessels on routes in the northern Black Sea. Moscow has launched frequent drone and missile attacks on the Ukrainian grain export infrastructure.
